Stavros A. Karkanis, holds a B.SC in Mathematics from University of and PhD since from the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications of EKPA, entitled “Texture Recognition in Digital Images Supported by Multiprocessors Architectures”.
Today he is a Profeessor in the Department of Mathematics of the University of Thessaly.
Stavros Karkanis has worked in the private sector in research projects funded by European or national funds mainly as a specialist partner in IT product development projects. He has also collaborated with the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications of EKPA in research projects, but also with the Informatics Institute and the Industrial Safety Systems Reliability Laboratory (EASBA) of the Institute of Nuclear Technology – Radiation Protection of EKEFEE “Dimokritos”. These Projects were included in corresponding funding such as FP6 and FP7, ISP, BCR, ESPRIT, IMT, BRITE-EURAM, etc. but also in nationally funded programs such as PENED, PAVE, EPEAEK, ESPA etc. He has also been a member of steering committees upon invitation for the formation of European Union research funding frameworks such as BRITE-EURAM and IMT of the XII Directorate.
From December 2014 to October 2015 he was a visiting Professor at the Department of Informatics at the University of Cyprus.
The research work of Mr. Stavros A. Karkanis is represented by a total of more than 70 research publications in reputable scientific journals and conferences and a total of more than 1900 cross-references and h-index=20

His research interests are in the area of image processing and machine vision, pattern recognition and artificial intelligence as well as analysis and processing of large volume data from vehicles.
He has participated as an invited reviewer in scientific journals such as IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks, IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, IEEE Conference on Intelligent Systems and Signal Processing (IEEE-ISSP 2013), IEEE Conference on Pattern Recognition (IEEE- ICPR etc.) but also as an external evaluator after invitation to research organizations in European countries such as Institut National du Cancer, Cancer Biology department-France, FWF Austrian Science Fund, Austria etc. The recognition of his research work is significant with hundreds of citations in his research work. Today he participates in NSPA – EDC projects, and is a Reviewer in scientific organizations IEEE/Springer/MDPI etc. as well as in research proposal evaluation committees in Greece and abroad.
During the period 2012-2016 he participated in innovation competitions with proposals for telematics applications and the respective applications received a series of awards such as in the years 2013 & 2014 egg/eurobank, Hackathons (Food4Charity – Battlehack Athens 2015/DaaM – Crowdhackathon Insurance 2016/Is this licensed – Koding Hacksummit 2016), MIT-EF, 2015 Corallia, since 2017 a strategic collaboration has been completed with OneDdealer AE of the Motor-Oil group for applications of fleet management, vehicle sharing mobility, safe driving and analysis of the corresponding large volume data from vehicles
