The Department of Mathematics operates the legislated Research Laboratory Mathematical Sciences Research Laboratory (MSRL) (Official Government Gazette 4824/issue B ‘/ 19.10.2021)

The MSRL aims to serve the educational and research needs of Theoretical Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Modeling of Computational Mathematics, Teaching and Philosophy of Sciences. It also aims to study the applications of the above areas and the interaction of the Science of Mathematics with other Sciences.

The Mathematical Sciences Research Laboratory, with Director of Laboratory Professor Nikos Karachalios, includes the following research staff:

  •  Nikos Karachalios, Stavros Karkanis, Panayiotis Bobotas, Nikolaos Tsirivas, Giorgos Kapetanakis, Vasilios Zarikas, Stamatis Pouliasis, Spiros Georgakopoulos, Panagiotis Polymerakis as Faculty members of the Department.
  • Maria Adam, Associate Professor of the Department of Computer Science and Biomedical Informatics, as Faculty member of another Department of the University of Thessaly.
  • Aikaterini Aretaki, Konstantinos Vetas, Paris Kyriazopoulos, Ioannis Rizos, Ilias Tergiakidis, Christina Karafyllia, Dirk Hennig as postdoctoral researchers of the Department.
  • Dimitrakakos Emmanouil, Ioannis Kampitsis, Antonios Kripotos, Christos Ntavas, Sakellariou Panagiotis, Chrisovalantis Chados as PhD candidates of the Department.

The mission of the MSRL is the implementation of actions for interdisciplinary research and its support in the above research areas. In this context, the establishment of the Laboratory aims to:

  • The cultivation of scientific research in the Mathematical Sciences and their interdisciplinary areas.
  • The production and development of an innovative grounded interdisciplinary theory for the objects under study through the synthesis and further specialization of the already utilized theoretical and / or methodological approaches and research tools from various areas of Mathematical Sciences.
  • The coverage of the didactic needs of the students of the Department of Mathematics of the University of Thessaly in the subjects under study.
  • The coverage of corresponding teaching needs of the students of the other Departments of the University of Thessaly, if this is possible and requested by these Departments.
  • The organization and support of postgraduate and doctoral studies in the research areas under study.
  • Undertaking the execution of research, training and development projects or studies by other bodies in accordance with the existing provisions.
  • The promotion of cooperation between its members, as well as the collaborating bodies. This cooperation is based on the principles of academic freedom and integrity as well as the observance of the rules of academic and research ethics. Also, basic principles of the Laboratory are equal treatment, respect and the absence of any kind of discrimination between the members and those involved with the Laboratory.
  • The development of collaborations with other related Research Laboratories or Centers and Universities in Greece or abroad, for the purpose of exchanging scientific knowledge and know-how, in the context of academic or research programs or academic and research networks, provided that the scientific objectives coincide, go hand in hand and complement each other with those of the Laboratory.
  • Collaboration with other Research Laboratories of Public Bodies, Organizations, Institutes, Enterprises, municipalities, communities and other social and scientific bodies and public benefit institutions aiming at the contribution of the Laboratory in improving the quality of services or products and productivity in general involving the research areas of the Laboratory.
  • The organization of scientific lectures, workshops, seminars, symposia, conferences and other scientific events, by inviting scientists of recognized prestige from Greece or abroad, the production of modern research and educational material and publications in printed and online form in Greece and abroad.
